Complete moving checklist: before, during and after
Organizing a move requires planning. This checklist covers everything: from choosing the date to canceling utilities, from packing to changing your address. Follow the steps in order and your move will be stress-free.
2 months before: planning
The planning phase is the time to make the most important decisions and organize logistics.
- Set the moving date — avoid end of month and weekends if possible
- Request at least 3 quotes and compare prices
- Choose the moving company and book in advance
- If renting, notify your landlord within the terms of your contract
- Start decluttering: sell, donate or dispose of items you no longer need
- Check if you need parking permits for the moving truck (restricted zones)
4 weeks before: utilities and documents
One month before is the time to handle paperwork and utilities.
- Cancel or transfer utilities: electricity, gas, water, internet, phone
- Notify address change to: bank, insurance, doctor, employer
- Set up mail forwarding with your postal service
- Cancel subscriptions tied to your address (gym, newspapers, delivery services)
- Get packing materials: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, blankets
- Photograph complex furniture before disassembly (for reassembly reference)
- Book internet installation at the new home (allow 2-3 weeks)
2 weeks before: packing
Two weeks before, start systematic packing, beginning with the least-used rooms.
- Start with least-used rooms: basement, garage, storage
- Pack room by room, labeling every box with contents and destination
- Separate valuables and important documents — carry them with you personally
- Pack fragiles with bubble wrap and paper: plates vertically, glasses wrapped individually
- Disassemble large furniture and put screws in labeled bags
- Prepare a "first day box" with: sheets, towels, soap, coffee, chargers, medications
1 week before: final preparations
The final week is dedicated to details and verifications.
- Confirm date, time and details with the moving company
- Empty fridge and freezer — defrost the freezer
- Do a final laundry load and pack clean linens
- Prepare a cleaning kit for both the old and new home
- Verify all boxes are sealed and labeled
- Charge phone, power bank and keep house documents handy
- Notify neighbors about the move (especially in apartment buildings)
Moving day
On moving day stay calm, follow the plan and supervise.
- Do a final walk-through of every room, closet and drawer
- Check meters and note readings (electricity, gas, water)
- Supervise loading and indicate unloading priorities
- Take photos of the property condition before handing over keys
- Do a quick clean of the home you're leaving
- Verify nothing was left in basement, garage, balconies
After the move: the first week
In the new home there are things to do right away to settle in.
- Verify all boxes arrived and check for any damage
- Activate utilities at the new home (electricity, gas, water, internet)
- Assemble essential furniture: bed, table, kitchen
- Check that locks and windows work — change the lock if necessary
- Introduce yourself to neighbors — it's a good investment for the future
Address change and bureaucracy
Within 20 days of moving you must notify the municipality of your address change. Here's everything you need to do.
- Address change: file the declaration online on the ANPR portal or in person within 20 days
- ID card update: required when it expires, but useful to update immediately
- Driver's license and vehicle registration: license doesn't need updating, but vehicle registration does
- Family doctor: choose a new doctor at your local health authority
- Waste tax (TARI): the municipality registers you automatically after the address change
- Voter card: updated automatically by the municipality
- INPS and tax agency notification: automatic with the address change
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I organize the move?
Ideally 6-8 weeks before. During high demand periods (end of month, summer) 2 months in advance is better. The absolute minimum is 2 weeks.
Should I empty furniture drawers?
Yes, drawers should be emptied to reduce weight and risk of damage. Only light clothes can stay in dresser and wardrobe drawers.
How soon must I change my address?
Within 20 days of moving. You can do it online on the ANPR portal (anagrafenazionale.interno.it) or in person at the municipality. A municipal officer will visit to verify.
What should I put in the first day box?
Sheets, towels, soap, toilet paper, chargers, coffee/tea, a few plates and cutlery, essential medications, documents, keys. Everything you need for the first night.
Do I need a transfer or reactivation for utilities?
If the meter is active (previous tenant didn't close it), request a transfer (change of name). If closed, request a reactivation. Both take about 1 week.
